Getting things done – Dunmore Drive and Dunmore Gardens – an update #dundeewestend

Michael is pictured in Dunmore Gardens where the road surface is really poor and we had long requested resurfacing.

This was agreed but resurfacing work in both Dunmore Drive and Dunmore Gardens had to be postponed from late 2022 as another resurfacing project over-ran due to flooding issues – so we sought assurances from the City Council that the work will take place in early 2023.

We were initially advised as follows from the Senior Engineer – Roads Maintenance Partnership :

“At present all being well, the works are currently programmed for the last week in February, first week in March.

The only sticking point is with the increases in the Bitumen prices there may be a possibility that the works may be postponed until after March. I am currently working out the likely outturns for the works on site now against the budget.

Once this has been completed I will let you know.”

We are pleased to now advise that we were recently further updated as follows :

“Latest position is still the same, programmed for last week in February, first week in March. It looks like the budget will be there to complete the works.”

Michael is pictured in Dunmore Gardens. Having long campaigned for road resurfacing for both Dunmore Gardens and Dunmore Drive which are badly deteriorated, we are pleased to advise that resurfacing is now imminent.

The Roads Maintenance Partnership has confirmed that resurfacing woks are programmed to commence on Wednesday 9th November, with works expected to take 5 working days.

Having had complaints from residents about the state of the road surface in Dunmore Gardens, I raised these concerns with the City Council’s Roads Maintenance Partnership and have now received the following positive response :

“An order has been raised by the Road Maintenance Partnership inspector for pothole repairs in Dunmore Gardens with a timescale for completion of approximately thirty days.”

Pothole repairs – Dunmore Gardens #dundeewestend

I recently received complaints about the quality of pothole repairs in Dunmore Gardens and therefore asked the Roads Maintenance Partnership to re-inspect these.

I have now received the following response :

‘The repairs were inspected and I note that these pothole repairs do not have a film of bond coat painted on the existing road surface prior to filling which will affect the long term adhesion and therefore durability, and I will take this matter up internally.

DCC Actionable Pothole Definition: “A surfacing defect will become actionable when it is greater than 300mm in diameter, the leading edge of a raised or depressed vertical face is proud of the immediately adjacent surfacing by 20mm on footways and 40mm on carriageways.”

The material specified for use in carriageway pothole repairs is chosen to suit a depth of 40mm, or greater.  By trying to carry out a repair to a defect of insufficient depth the material sits proud and fretts at the edges as the aggregate within the material cannot fit in the depression once compacted.  If we use smaller aggregate then there is insufficient strength in the material to resist expected vehicular loading.

Dunmore Gardens, when assessed in comparison to other adopted residential streets throughout the city, is in fair condition and therefore a proposed timescale for resurfacing in year 2020/21 is in my opinion reasonable.’

The road surface is in poor shape and I have made the point that the road needs resurfacing far earlier than this – I will continue to press this matter.

Getting things done … Dunmore Gardens

Residents in Dunmore Gardens contacted me recently about the state of part of the pavements in the street – some are not adopted by Dundee City Council.

I raised this with the City Engineer, who advises:

“I attach a plan showing in blue the adopted footways in Dunmore Gardens.   These are currently not on the Unadopted Footway Priority List so will be assessed for inclusion in 2013/14.”

The plan referred to is given below but a higher definition PDF can be downloaded here:
