West Marketgait – update on tree replacement #dundeewestend

Last year, we reported that, following Storm Arwen resulting in a large tree falling at West Marketgait near Palais Court, an assurance had been given to us that a new tree would be planted during a future planting season.

We are pleased to report that this has now happened – Michael is pictured at the new tree – below.

.With regard to several other felled trees we reported, the Service Manager (Environment) has updated us as follows :

“Forestry have further advised that all trees mentioned have been purchased and are in transit from our supplier and will be planted in due course.”

Tree update – West Marketgait #dundeewestend

Some time ago, as a result of Storm Arwen, a large tree in West Marketgait unfortunately fell.
The tree was removed but there has not yet been replanting.

We recently, at the request of Palais Court residents, contacted the council’s Senior Forestry/Arboriculture Officer, asking for an assurance about replanting and have received this helpful response :

“We are still going to replace the tree discussed and at present we are collating a number of replanting projects required from the City Centre to the street trees and various areas around the town.

This will be spread over a number of planting seasons starting this autumn winter planting season.

Note the back fill is for safety purposes only and will be lifted prior to re planting.”

Progress with resurfacing works at Dudhope Roundabout

Further to my article last month about the road closure at the Dudhope roundabout that started last Monday, the photo (right) shows the partly completed resurfacing works as of last night.

I was pleased to be informed earlier this morning by the City Engineer that progress is on schedule to allow re-opening of the road network at the roundabout on Sunday.

Temporary Traffic Order – Dudhope Roundabout

A Traffic Order from the City Council covering the Dudhope Roundabout on the West End Ward east boundary:

Dundee City Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose of facilitating carriageway resurfacing works.  The Order is expected to be in force for nine days from 8th April 2013.  Its maximum duration in terms of the Act is eighteen months.

The effect of the Order is to prohibit temporarily all vehicular traffic in (1) all lanes of the Dudhope Roundabout, (2) Lochee Road at a point 20 metres or thereby west of Dudhope Roundabout (3) North Marketgait (eastbound and westbound) at Dudhope Roundabout and (4) West Marketgait (northbound and southbound) at Dudhope Roundabout.
Vehicular access to Parker Street will be maintained from North Marketgait at its junction with Constitution Road by following the temporary diversion traffic signs.  The west bound (North Marketgait – Lochee Road) exit from Bell Street multi storey car park will be closed for the duration of the works, all traffic will exit this car park via Dudhope Crescent Road.  The car park entry points are unaffected by the works.
From Lochee Road, the Diversion Route for South and West Marketgait is via Polepark Road, Brook Street, Guthrie Street, Horsewater Wynd, Hawkhill and reverse.  From Lochee Road the Diversion Route for North Marketgait is via Dudhope Terrace, Sommerville Place and Constitution Road.  All other diversion routes are via the Inner Ring Road.
Please forward any comments you may have regarding this proposal to the Network Management Team, City Development Department, Dundee House, 50 North Lindsay Street, Dundee, DD1 1LS, no later than five working days prior to the commencement date.  If you have any queries please call 433168.

The West End welcomes Bash Street!

I received the following consultation letter from Dundee City Council’s Street Naming & Numbering Team yesterday:

“CIVIC GOVERNMENT (SCOTLAND) ACT 1982
There is a proposal for a children’s soft play area within the former works buildings off West Marketgait.
As part of this development DC Thomson is in discussions with a local developer re licensing the Beano IP within the branded children’s soft play centre.    Planning consent has been granted for the soft play centre.
The Bash Street Kids will feature heavily in the new centre alongside Dennis the Menace, Gnasher, Minnie the Minx, Roger the Dodger and The Beano logo.

Dundee City Council has received a request from DC Thomson to allocate the name Bash Street to the street adjacent to 142/144 West Marketgait which currently has no name.    This is to tie-in with the proposed new build and to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of The Beano in 2013 in the comic’s hometown.

The location of this street is shown on the attached plan.   See below:
I should therefore be obliged if you could consider this proposal and return any comments you may have on this matter before Friday 16th November 2012.
If the proposal is to proceed, this new street name will be put to the next available Committee after the above date for approval.”

I have responded saying I think this is a superb proposal.   Dundee having its very own Bash Street seems very appropriate and I’m very pleased that Bash Street will be in the West End Ward!

Temporary Traffic Order – Dudhope Roundabout : An Update

I recently mentioned the proposed temporary prohibition of traffic in all lanes of the Dudhope Roundabout and access to North and West Marketgait and Lochee Road from the roundabout for ten days from 10th September.

The City Council advised yesterday:

“I refer to my e-mails dated 9 August and 22 August in respect of the above Temporary Traffic Order.

I would advise that it has been decided that the works will not take place at this time and therefore this Order will no longer be going ahead.”

This is a sensible decision, as many students will be returning to the adjacent Opal 1 University of Abertay accommodation at the time.   Hopefully the resurfacing work can be carried out later in September/October.

West Marketgait – Carriageway Resurfacing

The City Council has written to affected householders and properties about the above matter as follows :

West Marketgait – Carriageway Resurface

I wish to notify you that road resurfacing works are programmed to commence at the above location, between West Port Roundabout and Nethergate Junction on Monday 20th September 2010 and will last for approximately 4 days. The works will be carried out between 7pm and 7am to limit inconvenience. The works are scheduled for South bound for first two nights and North bound over the following two nights.
The Contractor for the works is Tayside Contracts.

In the interest of public safety, a road closure will be implemented and through traffic will be diverted via Perth road and Hawkhill when the north bound is closed. When the south bound is closed traffic will be diverted along North Marketgait, East Marketgait onto South Marketgait.

Vehicular access will be maintained where possible, although we ask for vehicular traffic movements to be kept to a minimum and some minor delays may be experienced.
Please note that pedestrian thoroughfare will be maintained throughout the works. The Crossing at the Salvation Army will be closed but Nethergate crossing will remain open.
If you have any queries regarding this matter, please contact the City Council on 433885.

West Marketgait

The City Council has today advised councillors that Scotland Gas Networks has issued details of the forthcoming West Marketgait gas main replacement works, starting on Monday 18 May – the work will last for 10 weeks.

Although there are no road closures planned, there will be one lane, out of two, closed in each direction or a contraflow system during the works. The Council advises that :

“… delays are expected during peak times (possibly some at lunch time) especially for the first few days, after which some drivers usually adjust their travelling times or find alternative routes during peak times.

“All traffic lights on Inner Ring Road will be closely controlled from our CCTV/Urban Traffic Control room in Tayside House during the week and weekends as necessary to minimise delays.”

Westbound – Lochee Road

The City Council has advised me that from 17th June – for four nights – westbound traffic on Lochee Road between Blinshall Street and the North Marketgait roundabout will be prohibited between 7pm and 2am each night.

I am advised that this is because of telecommunications ducting works and the alternative route is via West Marketgait/Hawkhill/Horsewater Wynd/Guthrie Street/Brook Street/Polepark Road.

Pedestrian thoroughfare will be maintained throughout.

For further information, contact the Planning & Transportation Department on 433168.

West Marketgait

The City Council has advised me that, because of repairs being carried out by Scottish Water, vehicles will not be able to drive northbound on West Marketgait between the Hawkhill by-pass and Lochee Road next Sunday (23rd September) for one day only.
Pedestrian access is unaffected.
If you have any queries, please contact the Planning & Transportation Department on 433168.
