Good news about Dundee’s tourist information service

Back in December, I welcomed the decision that tourist information service was to move back to the City Centre as part of the new City Square Box Office facility.

I had previously complained to Dundee and Angus Tourist Board when it previously moved the facility out of Castle Street and down to Discovery Point as I feel a main City Centre location is vital, so so the move to the City Square is good news.

The new centre in the City Square opened last week.   Here’s some information from VisitScotland about it:

VisitScotland Information Centre in Dundee (has a) new home in City Square … leased as part of a three-year deal from Dundee City Council.

The new location provides a fantastic platform to deliver even more information provision to a higher footfall; the move is expected to increase the impact that the Information Centre has in encouraging locals and visitors alike to spend more time in Dundee and surrounding areas, experiencing more of what the city has to offer and extending the visitor stay.

In the current economic climate, it’s more important than ever that we take a collaborative approach to promoting tourism. This partnership between VisitScotland and Dundee City Council marks the start of an exciting new chapter for tourism in Dundee

As a result of the move, the opening hours of the new Information Centre will be Monday to Friday 0900-1630 and Saturdays 0930-1600 (0930 – 1700 during the summer months).

Looming tourism developments in the city such as the V&A Museum of Design Dundee, the redevelopment of the waterfront, the opening of the new Malmaison Hotel and others taking place across the city will all benefit from the move. The relocation is also timely as Scotland welcomes increased numbers of visitors through the impact of milestone events, including the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, The Ryder Cup and the year-round Homecoming Scotland celebrations.

One City, Many Discoveries

City of DiscoveryAs the ‘Creative Dundee’ blog pointed out back in April, the “City of Discovery” campaign is no longer (see “RIP Dundee, City of Disco Very” at http://tinyurl.com/discoverdundee).

The campaign was recently re-born as “Dundee – One City, Many Discoveries” – see logo below. Actually I rather like the new branding (hence the sticker on my car!) but it is not entirely great that if you go to the http://www.cityofdiscovery.com/ site you are met by the stunning page indicating :

“Could not grab the file from: http://i3.ytimg.com/vi/”

OK, a temporary problem I am sure (I have advised the Director of City Development and the Head of Public Relations at the City Council) and if you can manage to hack your way into the site, the Dundee Ambassadors bit is a good concept.   Go to http://tinyurl.com/dundeeamb to see more.

The branding is fresh and updated; City of Discovery has moved on and it is really rather good. One City Many Discoveries

From the City of Discovery website :

Dundee – City of Discovery is the jewel of North East of Scotland.

In a setting on the banks of the River Tay described by actor and raconteur Stephen Fry as ‘ludicrously ideal’, Dundee offers a peerless quality of life.

Modern Dundee is a city of discovery, diversity and dynamism, qualities encapsulated by world leading research in the life sciences, a burgeoning digital media sector, a vibrant arts and cultural life and a successful local economy.
